Feb 17th-20th

  High Frequency Words We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are:  Shadow Art - To finish up our unit on energy we made shadow art - We drew our bodies and then traced the outline onto the orange paper.  - We colored in the traced outline completely black to represent the shadow.  - Then we glued the figure onto the paper, placing it in front the black one so it looked like there was a shadow behind it. Phonics: EA and A - We have learned that the vowel team EA can make the short e sound like in head - We also learned that the letter a can make a short o sound. The usually happens when it comes after a w, like in the words swamp and want - Please read over this week's decodables with your child and help them practice their decoding and comprehension.   High Frequency Words We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are: Phonics: EW. UI, UE We have learned that OO spells the long u sounds. But there are three other ways to spell this long sound - EW - comes at the end of a word (chew) - UI - comes in the middle of words (suit, juice) - UE - comes in the the end of words (blue)  We also made tissUE boxes to help us remember this phonics pattern Winter Olympics - We celebrated the start of the Winter Olympics - We made torches and wrote about which sport we are most excited to watch - We started a graph to track the medal counts for various countries - We drew Tina - the Olympic Mascot Making 10 Strategy - We reviewed the different ways to make 10 - This is a strategy that students learned in grade 1 and it would be a great thing to practice as fast facts at home - When...

Phonics:  -We reviewed vowel teams:  It is when there are two or more letters that work together to make one vowel sound: ai,ay ee, ea, ey oa, ow, oe ie, igh oo and oo *Please check your child's RED folder this weekend and re-read the decodables that we practiced this week   Groundhog Day -We read a story called Double Trouble Groundhog Day -We talked about whether we thought 'Balzac Billy' would see his shadow -We then learned that he DID see his shadow this year- 6 more weeks of winter - We then wrote how we feel about this: "I am happy because I like skating and playing hockey." "I am sad because I love riding horses in the spring." "I am sad because I can't wear my new shoes or ride my bike." "I am happy because I like building snowmen with my brother."
