High Frequency Words
We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are:
Expanding Sentences
Counting within 1000
Cardinal Directions
Phonics
- We looked at words with VCe patterns and exeptions
- When the letter C is followed by a silent E it spells /s/. and when the letter G is followed by a silent E it spells /j/
- Two exceptions for the silent e pattern are:
- VE - some words with VE have vowels that make the short sound not the long sound (e.g. give, live and have). This happens because in English words are not allowed to end with a v.
- Scribal O - In some silent e words there is an O that sounds like a short U. It is believed that a long time ago scribes had a hard time reading the U next to similar looking letters so they changed it to O to make it easier to read. (e.g. come, done, love, none, and some)
- Please check your child's red folder this weekend and read the decodables we practiced this week
