We will miss you Ms. May!

Thank you to Ms. May for all that she has done to keep our school clean and functioning so well.  Good luck in your future endeavours!

High Frequency Words

We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are:

Phonics

-ING:
is an ending we can add to verbs to change their tense.
-We add the -INMG ending to verbs when we are talking about actions that continuously happen in the present or past.  When a verb has the -ING ending, a helping verb comes before it: I am going.  He is going.  We are going.  She was going.  They were going

Closed Syllables:
A closed syllable has only one vowel and the vowel is followed by one or more consonants.  The vowel sound is short.  i.e. hop, kick and fast

Open Syllables:
An open syllable has only one vowel and the vowel is the last letter in teh syllable.  The vowel sound is long.  i.e. hi, go and she

- Please check your child's red folder this weekend and read the decodables we practiced this week

- If your child did not draw, or finish, their picture you could encourage them to do so

Skip Counting

- Skip counting is like taking big jumps when you count!
- Instead of counting one by one (like 1, 2, 3) you skip numbers. For example: If you count by twos, you say 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on. It's like finding shortcuts when you count.
- We use it for lots of things, like counting money by fives or tens, or figuring out how many wheels are on a bunch of bikes.
- Skip counting helps you count faster and is fun to do!
- The goal in grade 2 is to skip count (within 1000) forwards and backwards by 20s, 25s or 50s starting at 0, and to skip count by 2s and 10s starting at any number.

The Confluence

- We had our first off-site activity of the year and visited The Confluence
- Students participated in various activities including:

    - Building a 3D map of the area we now call Calgary
    - handling and identifying artifacts from the diverse groups of people who call this area home

Regions of Canada

We are learning about the different regions of Canada
-We learned that each regions shares the same kind of land, weather, or even ways of life.
- We are working in a small group to read some informational slides and then answer questions in our booklet
