High Frequency Words

We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are:

important, until, children, side, feet, car, mile, night, walk, white

Phonics: -ar, -or /er/ & -air, -ear -are /air/

-The graphemes AR and OR can spell /er/ at the end of two-syllable words (i.e. doctor, author, dollar and nectar)
- The graphemes -air, -ear and -are can all spell /air/

Our Chicks Have Arrived!

-We came into the classroom on Monday morning to discover that 4 chicks have hatched and one more is making its way out of the egg!
-We noticed that:
-they get really sleepy quickly and then they get up
-they get up and play and crawl all over each other
-they fall over easily
-stepping in the egg shell
-they cuddle together
-they are trying to help the one to hatch
-trying to stand up

Oopsies

-We have been playing a fun game called Oopsies to practice many different phonics rules that have learned throughout the school year.
-We take turns reading a word on a card and then if we get an 'oopsies' card we have to take everyone's cards
-Whoever ends up with the least amount of cards wins

Perspective Writing

-What would you have to say, hear and feel if you were a chick that hatched in our class?
-We wrote about what life would be like from the perspective of the chicks
-Some of the ideas we came up with are:

"I opened my eyes and I was in a dark thing."
"The giants named me Pickles."
"First, Peanut Butter was in an incubator.  It was so nice and warm."
"Suddenly, a giant picked me up and put me in a cage with other chicks that look like me."
"Peanut Butter and Oreo are stuck in a white egg."
"First, I stuck in a dark, small area."
"I was in a dark place."
"I bursted out of my egg and I was surrounded by other chicks."
"A giant picked me up.  I was scared and I didn't know what to do so I said help help and the giant put me down."
"A terrible thing happened, they names us!"
"A big face was staring at me."
"Then I when I woke up another giant was staring at me and it was scary."
"First, a big giant picked me up and put me in a room with a million other giants staring at me.  They were so loud and it hurt my ears."

Addition With Regrouping

- We are revisiting double digit addition with regrouping
- This week we went over 4 strategies: base ten, expanded form, number line and standard model
