High Frequency Words

We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are: 

sea, began, grow, took, river, four, carry, state, once, book

Phonics: 

The grapheme EAR can spell /ear/

-One way to spell /air/ is EAR like in bear

-EAR can also spell a different sound.  Sometimes EAR spells /ear/ like in hear

-EAR usually comes at the end of a word like in near and dear.

We also learned 4 lesson common ways of spelling the long a sound: 

- AIGH

- EI

- EA

- EIGH

Life Cycle of a Plant

-In science this week we are learning about the life cycle of a plant

-We learned about all of the different stages involved (seed, germination, seedling, flower, fruit, seed, tree, cone, fruit)

-We have planted our own seeds and we are excited to observe them go through the different stages!

Subtraction with Regrouping Using Base Ten

- We began to review subtraction with regrouping

- We started by looking at the base ten strategy

    -     You start by drawing the larger number in ten rods and ones blocks

    -     Subtract the ones first - if you need to regroup take one of the tens and break it into ones

    -     Subtract the ones and don't forget to also subtract the tens from your second number!
