Hello Families! As we wrap up our wonderful year together, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our students and families. This year has been filled with so much learning, growing, laughter, and the building of a truly special classroom community. Thank you for your support, kindness, and partnership throughout the year. We are so proud of everything we accomplished together! Wishing each of you a fun, relaxing summer filled with sunshine, adventures, and time to rest and recharge.  Phonics -suffixes are added to the end of a word to change the words meaning. -the suffix -ment generally changes a verb into a noun.   -a payment is money paid to someone or the act of paying - the suffixes -able and -ible are added to indicate able to or can do Words of the Week -Thank you to everyone for your ongoing commitment to practicing the words of the week throughout the year -It has been so great to see all of the students try their best on the tests after practicing at home -Being the last week of school, next week, we won't be having a test. Acrostic Poems -We learned that an acrostic poem is where the first letter of each line spells out a word or message -Then we use words or phrases to describe that word -We chose to write about summer ideas -Afterwards, we practice memorizing our poem and recited it in front of the class! June 8th- June 12th

 Phonics- The Suffix -y (means full of or described as) -Suffixes are added to the end of a word to change the word's meaning. -The suffix -Y means full of or described as -When we use -Y as a suffix, it makes the long /e/ sound -Y is usually added to nouns to make them adjectives.  Adjectives are describing words -If I say cloudy outside, that means the sky is full of clouds. Phonics: The Suffix -ness means state of, or the way something is - When adding -ness to words that end in Y, we follow the y to i rule (happy = happiness) Spelling Test- Homographs For next week, please spend some time reviewing homographs. Homographs are words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. Homographs to Know: 1.)Bat – an animal that flies / sports equipment used in baseball 2.)Park – a place to play / to stop a vehicle 3.)Watch – a timepiece / to look at something 4.)Ring – a piece of jewelry / the sound a bell makes 5.)Duck – a bird / to lower your head quickly 6.)Can – a meta...

June 1st- June 5th

 Phonics- -ER, -OR and -IST / - ISH -The suffixes -Er, -OR and -IST mean some (one/thing) that does an action -When we add the suffix -ER to verbs, or action words, it makes the verb become a noun meaning one that does (i.e. Teach to Teacher) -OR and -IST are also used to make verbs into nouns -OR is pronounced /er/ as in sailor. -IST is pronounced /ist/ as in cartoonist - We also learned about the suffix -ish meaning somewhat like Spelling Test- Homophones -For next week, please spend some time reviewing homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same when we say them, but they have different meanings and different spellings. Homophones to Know: To / Two See / Sea Sun / Son Right / Write One / Won Blue / Blew Hear / Here No / Know Be / Bee Their / There 1.) Practice at Home -Read each pair of homophones aloud. -Make sure you know the meaning of each word. -Try using each word in a sentence. -Ask a family member to quiz you on the pairs.   Phonics: -sion, -tion & -ture -syllables are words or word parts with one vowel sound.  Learning about syllables helps us read and spell. -Final stable syllables always come at the end of a word, -LE as in apple and puzzle.  Two more final stable syllables are -SION and -TION -SION can follow a vowel (vision or diversion) or a consonant (passion and extension) -TION can sometimes make the /ch/ sound like in the word question - Another final stable syllable we learned about is -ture, we hear the CH sound but it is spelled with -ture (e.g. picture, structure) High Frequency Words This will be the last weekly word list as we have now practiced all 300 high frequency words. Phonics: Signal Vowels -When followed by E, I, and Y, C spells /s/ and G spells /j/ - The 'signal vowels' signal, or tell us, that something will be different in a word -c /s/: When c is followed by an A,O or U it makes the /k/ sound When c is followed by E, I or Y it makes the /s/ sound -g/j/: when G is followed by an A, O, or U it makes the /g/ sound  -When G is followed by E,I or Y it makes the /j/ sound High Frequency Words We will be working on spelling the First 300 High Frequency words with a spelling test each Friday. During the week please practice reading, writing and nicely printing these words. The words this week are:  watch, far, real, almost, let, above, girl, sometimes, mountain, cut Measurement- Lengths of Yarn -We first measure estimate the length of pieces of yarn and then determine the measurement using counters - We discussed the differences between yarn lengths, as well as the differences between our estimates and the actual measurements   Animal Res...

Consequences -This week we have been talking about consequences -Consequences are the good and bad things that happen because of something that you do -Pretend that you need to tell someone else how to handle it when they get in trouble -What would you tell them to do or not to do? "Don't do it again because you might get in more trouble." "Learn from your mistakes." "You should not do that again or you may get in more trouble." "Show respect to elders and don't talk back again." "Accept the consequences." "Listen to the adult and what they said." "If you accidentally hurt someone and they are crying you should apologize." Phonics: -The Graphemes EW, EU, and UE spell /yu/ ; OU spells /u/  -OU is another way to spell /u/.  We know OU spells /ow/ as in shout.  Sometimes, OU can also spell /u/ as in soup and group -EW spells /yu/ at the end of a word like spew and nephew -UE spells /yu/ at the end of a word like...
